Yoga is extensively known as a form of exercise that stretches and strengthens the body through various poses known as ASANAS. For other people yoga is the realization of inner self satisfaction. For other it is a religion that they believe and must follow.

All of this statement makes it hard to really make a full realization of what yoga is.   So here are 10 Things You Should Know About Yoga.

1

Yoga is a group of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. According to Gavin Flood, Academic Director of the Oxford Center for Hindu Studies it has been defined as referring to "technologies or disciplines of asceticism and meditation which are thought to lead to spiritual experience and profound understanding or insight into the nature of existence. Yoga is also intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of other Indian religions.

Yoga’s evidences were first tracked in the archeological evidence which was found in stone seals exhumed from the Indus valley. Yoga postures were traced and seen fro the figures which were illustrated in the stone seals. The artifacts were placed on History books circa 3000 B.C., which was linked to the great Indus-Sarasvati Civilization which was known to be the largest civilizations that exist in the ancient world. The Indus-Sarasvati, being a maritime society, exported goods all over Africa and the Middle East. They build up sewage systems and put up geometrical brick roads and constructed multistory buildings.

While yoga is commonly seen as just being an exercise in the West, it is an important part of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. For those who are followers of these religions, yoga is not only seen as being an exercise, but is also a method that can be used to attain enlightenment. This practice has existed for thousands of years, and has been mentioned in a number of important Indian texts such as the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Contemporary yoga is comprised of a number of different principles, and many of these are taken from Indian religions.

4

Yoga is known to increase flexibility; yoga has postures that trigger the different joints of the body. Including those joints that are not acted upon with regular exercises routines. Yoga also increases the lubrication of joints, ligament and tendons. The well-researched yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body.

5

When doing yoga it is best to wear loose and comfortable clothing. Yoga is traditionally done and practiced barefoot, but if this does not suit you, you can just wear socks or soft-shoes. It is also best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Empty your stomach, clean your nostril and throat, and consume a glass of warm water 15 minutes before you start.

There are actually lots of different types of yoga; it is not strictly a term for the stretchy exercise we will be discussing. The term "yoga" can refer to any of these things:

7

Standing is one of the important yoga poses. This type of pose is helpful in aligning your body and your feet. This is also very useful in improving and maintaining a good posture. It is an advantage because if you have a bad posture, your backbones can be stretched and straightened without noticing it. Standing poses helps in giving strength to your legs and at the same time increase elasticity in your legs and hips because they are all connected to each other.

8

When you perform yoga, you’re actually massaging all the organs in your body. This improves circulation throughout the body and helps process bodily wastes more efficiently. Yoga is thought to be one of the few forms of exercise to do this.

9

It is interesting to note that for many people it is the exercise of the mind which is the most important aspect of yoga exercise. There is no other exercise like yoga anywhere in the world. Yoga exercise brings together the body and the mind, giving participants an entirely new sense of well-being and a heightening of self-esteem and self-worth, all from one type of exercise. Many people also note that their attitude to life and general improves and feelings such as anxiety, depression, and hostility decrease. Other people notice that their attention span increases and a rise in their learning efficiency as their memory grows sharper.

There are plenty of yoga techniques available. However, there are a few that are very effective, no matter where you are or when you’d like to practice. Here are five basic yoga techniques that form the foundation of many others. They are: relaxation, posture, meditation, joint movement, and deep breathing. Every technique performs its own function in concert with the others, to produce the desired effect. In Sanskrit, the movement of the joints is referred to as "sandhichalana". This yoga technique, as the name implies, focuses on the joints, which undergo full movements. It’s important to remember that this applies to all joints, from the hands to the neck and lower limbs.
